Assassin's Creed: The Land of the Morning Calm

Follow me on Tumblr: http://artofjasonkang.tumblr.com

Key Frames ideas for my cinematic. Kind of rushed the temple and the shanty town scene, will fix them up and reupload. I'm content with the bottom two though. It's funny, in the thumbnail sketches I played with the composition/camera angles more, but in the final 4 paintings, the comps ended up being pretty boring, almost similar to each other..

Some more characters for my take on Assassin's Creed! The first is the Soldier, then the Police Captain, and finally a Resistance Fighter. Will have more characters done in the following weeks if I have time!

Before and after transformation of the character. She goes through many challenges before she finally becomes an Assassin!

These are some ideas I had for the heroine for my take on Assassin's Creed.

More environment ideas for my reimagining of Assassin's Creed. Each column is a frame/scene from my cinematic with three ideations for each frame. Still playing around with the story/mood etc and not much into the design as of yet. Hopefully things will start settling into place in the coming weeks and I'll have a more accurate idea of what I want!

These are recent environments I did for class. This version of Assassin's Creed will take place mainly in Korea during the Japanese colonialism of the early 1900's. I thought this would be a good setting for a new Assassin's Creed because there has yet to be a game in the franchise set in Asia. Also, there was a lot going on in this part of the world at the time which I think would be interesting to incorporate into a game!

To give a little summary of the idea for my game, the setting takes place mainly in Korea during The Japanese occupation which occurs during the time period of 1910-1945. There's a lot of things happening during this time period and in this corner of the world, the biggest being World War II, which is why I thought it would be a great era to base a game off of.
My story starts by showing how the main character, Arang, and her sister are forced into becoming comfort women by the Japanese and are sent to the battle camps stationed in China with hundreds of other kidnapped women during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Arang and her sister try to escape and although she does her best to protect her, her sister is killed by the pursuing soldiers. Arang is then rescued by the brotherhood of Assassin's in Manchuria and through difficult training, she gains all the skills she needs to help liberate Korea from Japanese rule.

Also, for those who are wondering, the phrase "The Land of the Morning Calm" basically is a nickname for Korea, much like "the Land of the Rising Sun" is a way to sometimes refer to Japan. Both names are derived from the characters that make up the names of each country in their respective languages and how they both translate in English. Thought this would be an interesting way to name my game :)

  13. This...is an incredible setting, not to mention the awesome concept arts you have up there. Just by the glimpse of things I can see there is a profound depth of potential available here. The turmoils of history in that era is actually so fascinating that the storyline COULD extend to international level! Chosun resistance armies attached to Mao's communist party during Chinese civil war, Korean men forced into Japanese army and facing American marines in Pacific isles, special envoy secretly organized by the last emperor of Chosun dynasty to Hague, these are just some of the stuffs that immediately come to mind.

Although the chances of that happening is mininscule, your vivid art captured my imagination and let it spin. I love the darkish, yet so authentic backgrounds of colonial Korea you have interpreted.

Just to let you know, your work has sparked a wide and fervid interest in Korean web community. You can expect some more incoherent, yet passionate comments coming! :D

  24. I guess some of the stories of assassin's creed can not evade history of Korea because the modern history of war can not be said without Korea. So not just AC5, someday that stories can be used in AC series, I guess. And it is very thanks to draw such excellent arts to such a popular. God bless you.

As a hardcore fan of AC series, I've always thought this time period in Korea would be perfect for AC series. Especially with this guy who removed the last joint of his left ring finger.

I thought you might like to look into him. :) Incredible work.

    OMG, Korean Assassin is REAL!!

  29. i gotta admit, your concepts of the game are marvelous.
specially there was a REAL assasin brotherhood in the colonial era of Korea, which called 同義斷指會 (Dong-eui Dan-ji-hoi: the Brotherhood of Finger Cut for Eastern Justice).
And our all-time favorite patriot, Mr. Ahn, Jung-geun, who assassinated Ito Hirobumi, who was the chief instigator in the occupation of Korea was a head of the brotherhood.

You can check it on his biography or some of Korean history books, which can help you make your concepts much more plausible.

  35. I would play the shit out of this game. A female lead AND in Korea? It's tailored for me. Your work is AMAZING. I see a strong cinematic similarity between your work and 각시탈, which makes it easier to imagine the game.

  36. This looks amazing! I have no problem with where the setting is for assassins creed. But for it to be in Korea I would really like to know how it all plays out! Maybe Ubisoft will look at your concepts and ideas and agree to make this game!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. well....I would most definitely buy this game. ab-so-lute-ly amazing concept and art! Not sure how to convey the enthusiasm I feel. I really really wish this would be made into an actual AC game...

  38. Is there a way to get Ubisoft to publish this game with some type of petition? I would vote for this game to be published 10 times over, and get my friends to vote as well. Awesome concept, great historical relevance, and beautiful art to convey what was happening at the time of occupation. Main character reminds me of Yu Gwan-Sun.

  40. Thank you everybody! This artwork is kind of dated now, but the continuous feedback, even now, is astounding! Thanks so much, appreciate it a lot! I will strive to do better in the future

  41. I simply adore the idea of this setting, it would really be great if Ubisoft approached you about this... But I'm wondering, would there be an assassin's branch in Japan working with the Korean assassin's to take out the Templars within the Japanese military and government? Also Imperial Japan makes for a great Templar presence as I'm pretty sure there were powerful conspirators working within the state to control the empire. But seriously great work, I really wish I could play this game, and the protagonist just looks amazing!

  42. I know this is sort of old now, but woah. This is amazing... Truly stunning. I was wondering if it would be okay for me to attempt making one of the costume concepts? They're so beautiful, and finally a woman assassin... It's inspiring. I really hope this is made one day, because it is just brilliant - the design, the story, even the gameplay would be fantastic.
    Seriously... Woah.

  43. Nit-picky but in one of the pictures, there's a sign in Hangul. I thought Hangul was banned during Japanese colonialism.

Otherwise, I love your work! Pity, though, Ubisoft seems hell-bent on not making a AC game set in Asia, even though many have been suggesting China or Japan, and now Korea.

    ReplyDelete

    1. As far as I know, Hangul was not banned in the very beginning of the colonization. But it was not widely used for signs if I remember correctly although some of them were.

  47. I had thought of writing a fan novel about Assassin's Creed with Korean background but until now it has stayed as an idea. After seeing this, I'm actually planning to write it. In Korean I guess. Unless there's someone who will translate it for me.. My English is not that bad but I just can't be bothered to do 2 works at the same time...

  49. first of your art is amazing no arguments there i think the main problem with the time period is that guns are to advance to it would make the game a third person shooter rather than assassins creed what do u think on this matter

  52. what a great job! i'm astonished with the arts here. i wish Ubisoft will take this concept to the new AC, but leave the stereotype asian females in games where they have wide eyes and bouncing boobs (that would be japanese games)

  53. Wow, this artwork is amazing! I myself have been working on a fan fiction of the Assassin Brotherhood in Korea and I too think Korea would be a perfect setting for the brotherhood's struggle to maintain presence there (due to the history of Korea can be easily linked to strong Templar rule). This has given me inspiration and so changes in thought about my original story line following the Goryeo Dynasty during Mongolian invasions. Now I think I should set that aside for later and focus in more modernized eras. In fact I might even reference or link Arang in some point of the series (of course with citation of your creation).
